Supported Independent Living (SIL)

As part of the NDIS, Supported Independent Living (SIL) funding allows for workers to support participants of the scheme to live independently in the comfort of their own home.

The main objective of SIL is to provide assistance and supervision for participants’ daily tasks as well as building their individual skill sets. Usually, the living options available are shared in nature with several people living in one building or home.

Funding for Supported Independent Living

Assistance is provided for activities within the household and taking care of tasks within the home such as the preparation of meals as well as managing personal care needs such as showering, dressing and toileting.

When determining whether SIL is suitable for an NDIS participant, several factors will be considered including:

  • Whether alternative living options are more suitable
  • What support the participant currently receives as well as their requirements for person-to-person support
  • If the support matches the necessary criteria for SIL funding
  • The goals of the participant within their future home and the level of support required to live independently when completing daily tasks wherever possible
